Definition
DRM — DRM (digital rights management) is technology that encrypts video, music or books and controls how they can be played, copied or shared. A licensed app must obtain a decryption key from a license server before playback. Paid streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Spotify and Apple Music rely on DRM.
How streaming DRM works
- The service encrypts its video or audio before delivery, often inside MPEG-DASH or HLS streams.
- Your browser or app requests a license from the service's license server, proving you are a signed-in, paying user on an approved device.
- A protected component on your device, called a content decryption module, receives the key and decrypts the media only for playback.
- The decrypted content is meant to stay inside that protected path rather than being saved as a normal file.
The main DRM systems
| System | Company | Typically used in |
|---|---|---|
| Widevine | Chrome, Firefox, Android, many smart TVs | |
| FairPlay | Apple | Safari, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV |
| PlayReady | Microsoft | Edge, Windows, Xbox, many smart TVs |
Web browsers connect to these systems through a standard interface called Encrypted Media Extensions (EME).
What DRM means for downloading
This is the clear answer: SaveVidr cannot and will not bypass DRM. DRM-protected content from services such as Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Spotify or Apple Music is encrypted on purpose, and in many countries, including the United States and EU member states, circumventing such protection is itself prohibited by law, separately from copyright.
If a service lets you watch offline, use its own app's official download feature. Those downloads stay encrypted and play only inside the app while your subscription is active.
What SaveVidr can work with
- Publicly accessible videos that are not DRM-protected
- Your own uploads and content shared with permission
- Thumbnails and subtitles that a platform makes publicly available
Private posts, paywalled pages and login-only videos are also out of scope. If a link fails on the SaveVidr home page, protection or privacy settings are often the reason, and that is working as intended.
Is all encryption DRM?
No. Almost every website uses HTTPS encryption to protect data in transit, and some streams use simple segment encryption without license checks. DRM specifically means a licensing system that decides who may decrypt and play the content. Please respect creators and rights holders by only saving what you are permitted to.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can SaveVidr download Netflix or Spotify?
No. Those services use DRM, and SaveVidr cannot and will not bypass it; use the service's own offline download feature instead.
How do I know if a video has DRM?
Videos from paid subscription streaming services are almost always DRM-protected; if a public video still fails to download, it may be private or region-locked rather than DRM-protected.
