Definition

4K — 4K is a video resolution of roughly 4,000 pixels across. For TVs and online video it almost always means 4K UHD, 3840 × 2160 pixels, which is four times as many pixels as 1080p. Cinema uses a slightly wider 4096 × 2160 version called DCI 4K. 4K video needs much more data and processing power.

UHD vs DCI 4K

StandardPixelsWhere it is used

DCI 4K4096 × 2160Digital cinema projection and some cameras

When a video site or downloader says "4K" or "2160p", it means UHD. That is about 8.3 million pixels per frame, compared with about 2.1 million for 1080p.

What 4K demands

Four times the pixels means far more data. Platforms keep 4K files manageable with efficient codecs: online, 4K is often delivered as VP9 or AV1, while TVs and Blu-ray discs lean on H.265. Many 4K videos are also HDR and sometimes 60 frames per second, which raises the requirements further.

Why 4K matters when downloading videos

A 4K download looks spectacular on a large TV or monitor, but it is worth asking a few questions first:

  • Was it uploaded in 4K? A downloader can only deliver 4K when the original was published at that size. If the top option is 1080p, that is the real maximum.
  • Do you have the space? A few minutes of 4K can take hundreds of megabytes; long videos can reach several gigabytes. Estimate with the video file size calculator.
  • Can your device play it? Smooth 4K playback needs hardware decoding for the codec in use. Older laptops and budget phones may stutter, especially with AV1.
  • Will you notice? On a 6-inch phone screen, 4K and 1080p look very similar.

Good reasons to pick 4K

  • Watching on a 4K TV or a large high-resolution monitor
  • Cropping or zooming into footage you are allowed to edit
  • Archiving your own uploads at the best available quality

Downloading 4K with SaveVidr

Paste a link into the 4K video downloader and choose 2160p when it appears in the list. If it does not appear, the source simply does not offer it. For lighter files, the 1080p downloader is a practical alternative, and the resolution guide compares the options. Save only videos you own or have permission to download.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is 2160p the same as 4K?

Yes. In video sites and TVs, 2160p refers to 4K UHD at 3840 × 2160 pixels.

Why can't I find a 4K option for some videos?

The original was probably uploaded at a lower resolution, and no downloader can create real 4K detail that was never there.
