Definition
Resolution — Video resolution is the number of pixels that make up each frame, written as width × height (for example 1920 × 1080) or by a shorthand such as 1080p. More pixels can show finer detail, but they also need more data, so higher resolutions mean larger files and more demanding playback.
Common video resolutions
| Name | Pixels (16:9) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 144p | 256 × 144 | Very slow connections |
| 360p | 640 × 360 | Small screens, saving data |
| 480p (SD) | 854 × 480 | Older TVs, quick previews |
| 720p (HD) | 1280 × 720 | Phones and small laptops |
| 1080p (Full HD) | 1920 × 1080 | Most laptops, monitors and TVs |
| 1440p (QHD) | 2560 × 1440 | Large monitors |
| 2160p (4K UHD) | 3840 × 2160 | 4K TVs and big screens |
The number in names like 720p is the frame height in pixels. The "p" stands for progressive scan, meaning each frame is drawn in full rather than in alternating lines.
Vertical and unusual sizes
Phone-first videos flip the shape: a vertical Full HD clip is 1080 × 1920. Platforms generally still label it "1080p" based on the shorter side. Videos with other aspect ratios, such as square posts or widescreen films, have different pixel counts even at the same label.
Resolution is not the same as quality
A 1080p video compressed with a very low bitrate can look worse than a well-encoded 720p one. Sharpness depends on resolution, bitrate, codec and how the original was filmed. Upscaling a 480p clip to 1080p adds pixels but not real detail.
Why resolution matters when downloading videos
- Match your screen. On a phone, 720p or 1080p usually looks just as good as 4K and takes a fraction of the space.
- Check the source. A downloader can only offer resolutions the uploader provided. If the original is 720p, there is no genuine 1080p version.
- Plan storage. Each step up in resolution can multiply file size. The video file size calculator gives quick estimates.
- Think about playback. The highest resolutions often use newer codecs that older devices decode slowly.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What does the p in 1080p mean?
It stands for progressive scan, meaning each frame is shown complete rather than as two interlaced halves.
Is higher resolution always better?
Not always; on a small screen the difference may be invisible, and a higher resolution means a larger file and heavier playback.
