Definition

MP3 — MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III) is a lossy audio format that shrinks sound files by discarding detail the human ear is unlikely to notice. Introduced in the early 1990s, it supports bitrates up to 320 kbps and plays on practically every phone, car stereo, computer and music player.

How MP3 makes audio small

Uncompressed CD audio uses about 1,411 kbps. An MP3 at 128 kbps is roughly eleven times smaller. It gets there with a psychoacoustic model: very quiet sounds hidden behind louder ones, and some of the highest frequencies, are thrown away because most listeners would not hear them anyway. That is why MP3 is called lossy. The removed data cannot be recovered later.

Common MP3 bitrates

BitrateApprox. size per minuteTypical use
128 kbpsabout 1 MBPodcasts, speech, saving storage
192 kbpsabout 1.4 MBCasual music listening
320 kbpsabout 2.4 MBThe highest standard MP3 bitrate

Sizes follow directly from the bitrate. You can estimate any length with the MP3 file size calculator. MP3 can also be encoded with variable bitrate (VBR), which spends more data on complex passages.

Why MP3 matters when saving audio from videos

Most online videos do not carry MP3 audio. Streaming sites usually deliver AAC or Opus. Making an MP3 therefore means transcoding: decoding the original track and encoding it again. Two practical consequences follow:

  • A 320 kbps MP3 cannot sound better than its source. If the original audio stream was around 128 kbps, 320 kbps mostly adds file size.
  • MP3 still wins on compatibility. Older car stereos, cheap MP3 players and many DJ or editing tools accept it without fuss.

If you want to avoid an extra lossy step and your device supports it, M4A is often closer to the original stream. For editing work that needs an uncompressed file, use WAV.

Making an MP3 with SaveVidr

The video to MP3 converter offers 320 kbps and 128 kbps. Choose 320 for music you care about and 128 for talks, lectures or podcasts where size matters more. The MP3 bitrate guide goes deeper. Only convert content you have the right to keep.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is 320 kbps MP3 the same as lossless?

No. 320 kbps is the highest standard MP3 bitrate and sounds excellent to most people, but it is still lossy compression.

Why is my MP3 from a video not 320 kbps quality?

The MP3 can only be as good as the audio in the original video, so a higher bitrate setting cannot restore detail that was never there.
