Definition

Transcoding — Transcoding is the process of decoding a video or audio file and re-encoding it into a different codec, bitrate or resolution. It is used to improve compatibility, shrink files or change formats, for example turning AAC audio into MP3. Because most codecs are lossy, every transcode can lose a little quality.

How transcoding works

  1. Decode: the original stream is decompressed into raw frames or audio samples.
  2. Process (optional): the raw media can be resized, trimmed, cropped or have its frame rate changed.
  3. Encode: the result is compressed again with the chosen codec and settings.

Compare this with remuxing, which only changes the container and never touches the compressed data.

Common reasons to transcode

  • Compatibility: converting AV1 or VP9 to H.264 so an older phone or editor can play it.
  • Format change: turning a video's soundtrack into MP3.
  • Smaller files: lowering the resolution or bitrate to save space.
  • Streaming: platforms transcode every upload into many qualities for adaptive streaming.

The quality cost

Most video and audio codecs are lossy. Each lossy encode discards some information, and repeated transcoding stacks those losses, a problem called generation loss. You can keep it small by:

  • Starting from the highest-quality source available
  • Using generous settings for the new file, such as 320 kbps for MP3
  • Avoiding chains like MP3 to AAC to MP3
  • Remuxing instead whenever only the container needs to change

Transcoding can never add quality. Converting a 128 kbps source to 320 kbps, or upscaling 720p to 1080p, only makes the file larger.

Why transcoding matters when downloading

When you pick a format the source does not offer natively, the tool has to transcode. Saving a video's audio as MP3 is the most common case, since platforms usually deliver AAC or Opus. Transcoding also takes longer than a straight download, which is why some conversions need a few extra seconds.

Try the video to MP3 or video to WAV converters, and use them only on content you are permitted to convert.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does transcoding reduce quality?

With lossy codecs, yes, a little each time; high-quality settings keep the loss hard to notice.

What is the difference between transcoding and converting?

People often use them interchangeably, but transcoding specifically means re-encoding the media, while some conversions only change the container.
