Variable Bitrate (VBR) — Variable bitrate (VBR) is an encoding method that changes the amount of data used from moment to moment, spending more bits on complex passages and fewer on simple ones. Compared with constant bitrate (CBR), VBR usually gives better quality for the same average file size, which is why most streaming video uses it.
VBR vs CBR vs ABR
| Mode | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| CBR (constant) | Same bitrate every second | Predictable sizes, live broadcasts, old hardware |
| VBR (variable) | Bitrate rises and falls with complexity | Best quality per megabyte |
| ABR (average) | Varies, but aims for a target average | A compromise when size limits matter |
A simple example
Imagine a music track that opens with a quiet piano and ends with a full band. A CBR encoder gives both sections the same budget, wasting bits on the piano and starving the loud finale. A VBR encoder shifts bits from the easy part to the hard part. Video works the same way: a static slide needs very little data, while a fast camera pan through trees needs a lot.
VBR in audio files
MP3 encoders such as LAME offer quality-based VBR presets. The popular "V0" setting averages around 245 kbps, and "V2" around 190 kbps, though the real average depends on the music. AAC and Opus also commonly use VBR. A few very old players showed wrong song lengths for VBR MP3s, but modern devices handle them fine.
VBR in video
Almost every video you stream online is encoded with some form of variable bitrate. Encoders often use quality targets (for example, a constant quality setting) rather than a fixed number, letting the bitrate move freely. That is why two videos at the same resolution and length can differ a lot in file size.
Why VBR matters when downloading
- Sizes are estimates. A file size calculator gives a good approximation, but a VBR file can come out larger or smaller depending on the content. Try the video file size calculator for a ballpark figure.
- Listed bitrates are often averages. A "2 Mbps" stream may peak well above that during action scenes.
- Quality is usually better. For the same storage, VBR files tend to look and sound cleaner than CBR ones.
For audio choices in practice, read the MP3 bitrate guide or use the MP3 size calculator. Save only recordings you have permission to keep.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is VBR better than CBR?
For most files VBR gives better quality at the same average size; CBR is mainly useful when a fixed, predictable data rate is required.
Why do VBR files differ in size from estimates?
VBR spends more data on complex scenes and less on simple ones, so the final size depends on the content itself.
