Definition

MP4 — MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a digital container format that stores video, audio, subtitles and metadata in a single file. It usually holds H.264 or H.265 video with AAC audio, and it plays on almost every phone, computer, smart TV and web browser, which makes it the default choice for sharing.

MP4 in simple terms

An MP4 file is a box. The box itself does not decide how good the picture looks; the codec inside it does. MP4 is a container format standardized by ISO as MPEG-4 Part 14, and it grew out of Apple's QuickTime file structure. Files normally end in .mp4, and audio-only versions often use .m4a.

What can live inside an MP4?

  • Video: most often H.264, but also H.265 (HEVC) and AV1.
  • Audio: usually AAC; MP3 and other codecs are possible.
  • Extras: chapter markers, cover art, title and date metadata, and text subtitle tracks.

Why MP4 matters when downloading videos

Compatibility is the main reason to choose MP4. An MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio opens in the Photos app on iPhone, the Gallery on Android, Windows Media Player, VLC, iMovie, CapCut and nearly every video editor. If you plan to send a clip on WhatsApp, edit it, or play it on a TV from a USB stick, MP4 is the safe pick.

One thing to know: two MP4 files can look very different. The extension tells you nothing about the resolution, bitrate or codec. A 4K MP4 may contain AV1 video that an older laptop cannot decode smoothly, while a 1080p MP4 with H.264 will play on almost anything.

Getting an MP4 with SaveVidr

Paste a link into the video to MP4 tool and pick a quality from 144p up to 4K. The top option depends on what the uploader published: a video uploaded in 720p cannot become a true 1080p file. Please save only videos you own or have permission to keep.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is MP4 a codec?

No. MP4 is a container that holds compressed video and audio; the codec, such as H.264 or AV1, is what actually compresses the picture.

Does converting to MP4 improve quality?

No. Changing the container or re-encoding can never add detail that the source did not have, and re-encoding can lose a little.
