Definition
WebM — WebM is an open, royalty-free media container designed for web video, announced by Google in 2010. It is based on Matroska and carries VP8, VP9 or AV1 video with Vorbis or Opus audio. Chrome, Firefox and Edge play it natively, while support in Apple apps and video editors is more limited.
Where WebM came from
Before WebM, most web video depended on codecs that required patent licenses. Google released WebM so browsers could ship a free, open format. The container is a restricted version of Matroska (MKV), allowing only a short list of codecs:
Why you see WebM on video sites
Large platforms rely heavily on VP9 and AV1 because they compress well and carry no royalties. YouTube, for example, serves many of its higher-resolution streams in these codecs. When a downloader lists formats, WebM options often appear next to MP4 ones, and at resolutions above 1080p they may be the only originals available.
Why it matters when downloading videos
WebM files are efficient, but they are not always convenient:
- Chrome, Firefox, Edge and VLC open them without trouble.
- Safari has added WebM playback in recent versions, yet the iPhone Photos app and many editing apps still prefer MP4.
- Some messaging apps and smart TVs reject WebM uploads or play them without sound.
If you only need to watch on a computer, WebM is fine. If you plan to edit, share in a chat app or play on a phone gallery, choose MP4 instead. Changing a WebM to MP4 may require transcoding if the codecs inside are not supported by the target device.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does WebM play on iPhone?
Recent versions of Safari can play some WebM files, but the Photos app and many iOS apps still work better with MP4.
Is WebM lower quality than MP4?
Not inherently. Quality depends on the codec, resolution and bitrate inside the file, not on the container.
